Barilla Pavillion

An award-winning vision for Barilla's landmark project in Parma

The task

BUROMOSA, an emerging Rotterdam-based practice, was participating in an important competition for Barilla, a globally renowned food brand, celebrated for its iconic pasta and deep-rooted culinary heritage.

The requirements were demanding, with a tight schedule to produce images that met very specific guidelines for look, feel, and design elements, all while the project vision kept evolving. While the original commission involved these requirements, we later revisited the project in 2025 to fully realize its visual potential, refining the imagery to align with our current standards.

The results

The winning edge. Our images gave BUROMOSA a competitive edge, helping them progress to the final round and ultimately win the competition. We helped narrate the project’s potential, setting it apart from competitors.

A clear vision. BUROMOSA had a very clear and detailed vision for the project. We ensured that every design intent was reflected in our visuals

The project began with an ambitious and complex brief. The Barilla Pavilion was envisioned as a multifunctional space featuring a shop, food lab, restaurant, offices, and exhibition area. Given the strong identity of the brand, our visuals had to embody the idea of a center for innovation and community while maintaining a connection to the brand’s heritage.

The journey wasn’t straightforward. The vision was fluid, often changing from one meeting to the next, making the project seem deceptively simple yet requiring constant recalibration. The tight 14-day schedule to deliver six images added more pressure, especially as the expectations were high for quality and accuracy.

The need to match Barilla’s identity with detailed texturing and modeling made the job even more demanding. Rendering the façade correctly was particularly intricate, featuring complex geometric patterns inspired by Barilla’s iconic “Farfalle” pasta, and required us to go beyond typical design processes to ensure the visuals were both innovative and true to Barilla’s brand.

Collaboration was key. We worked closely with BUROMOSA, integrating ourselves into their design team, participating in numerous face-to-face meetings, and maintaining proactive communication to keep up with evolving requirements. This process required a lot of creative problem-solving and sometimes making bold suggestions to ensure the pavilion’s vision remained cohesive despite the ever-changing details.
